New Balance 408

The 408 is one of the simplest models in New Balance’s range, and precisely for that reason it made a comeback. It’s a walking and everyday model from a time when the brand focused mainly on comfort: wide-built, low to the ground and with a sole designed for long walks rather than speed.

The appearance is that of a shoe that doesn’t want to stand out. The upper combines mesh with synthetic leather panels in grey and off-white, with the large brand letter as a separate panel on the side and the model number printed small on the heel area. The midsole runs in a uniform band around the shoe with a fine ribbed pattern, and there is a fabric pull tab at the heel to pull the shoe on.

That sober grey is precisely why the model was picked up. When the so-called dad shoe trend broke through, it was the unassuming comfort models from the catalogue that became interesting: shoes that were never intended as fashion items and therefore look authentic.

Within the brand’s range, the New Balance Fresh Foam line and the New Balance FuelCell line serve the sporty side, while the New Balance Numeric provides the skate versions.
