Converse Run Star Hike: a Chuck on sawtooth soles
Put a classic high Chuck on a sole that looks like it was stolen from a hiking boot, and you have the Run Star Hike. The upper is familiar territory: the same canvas, the same row of eyelets, and the round star emblem right where it always is on the ankle. Underneath, something very different is happening. The white midsole runs like a thick, slightly wavy wedge far past the heel, and the edge beneath is cut into coarse sawteeth that run like a serrated rim around the whole shoe.
Those teeth are the whole point. They visibly protrude beyond the silhouette, making the shoe look wider than it is, and at the toe the sole curls up like a ski jump. There’s a pull tab on the heel, and the sidewall of the sole often has a deliberately scuffed-looking finish that makes the shoe look worn before you even put it on.
Within the Converse house, this is the most pronounced way to add height. The Chuck Taylor All Star Lift does the same with a smooth, neat wedge without teeth, and the Chuck 70 keeps the classic low rim with an off-white rubber edge. Anyone who compares it with the Puma Mayze will see that other brands apply the exact same trick: a court shoe on a lugged sole that will never see a mountain.
One thing to know before you compare: there exists a second term with virtually identical offerings under the shorter name Run Star. The shoes are the same; the naming hasn’t been tidied up yet. So feel free to search for both.
