Asics Japan

The Japan S is the shoe with which Asics brought its tennis past to the city. The silhouette comes from the brand’s court models of the 1970s and 1980s, but the execution is deliberately simplified: no noticeable cushioning, no technical claims, just a low leather upper with the crossed brand stripes over it.

The details are classic down to the seams. The leather has a fine grain texture, the toe carries a suede overlay in a contrasting shade and the signature stripes on the side are stitched bands that continue under the sole edge. The heel bears the branding in relief and the flat rubber sole runs in a thin band around the shoe, with a fine tread based on court outsoles.

The S suffix stands for the simplified version the brand made for everyday wear. Where Asics’s sports division owes its name to technology, this is the opposite: the cheapest and most sober model in the range, one that must rely on its shape.
