Adidas Football Boots

When West Germany became world champion in 1954 in pouring rain, half the team wore shoes by Adi Dassler with replaceable screw-in studs. That Miracle of Bern made adidas the football brand overnight, and it has never really relinquished that lead. From the Bundesliga dressing room to the Champions League final: the three stripes are as much part of the game as the center spot.

The range leans on three families, each with its own character. The Adidas Predator has been the boot for shooting power since 1994, once conceived by pro Craig Johnston, who stuck rubber fins on the instep to give the ball more swerve. The Adidas Copa descends from the Copa Mundial, the leather classic that has been made almost unchanged since 1979. And the X line is the speed series, with the Adidas X Speedportal and its predecessor Adidas X Speedflow as lightweights for the winger. For indoor play there is also the Super Sala.

You can see the history in the details. Reissues of the Predator Accelerator still carry the fold-over tongue with the logo, plus the characteristic rubber ribs in the striking zone. Modern top models like the Predator Edge go laceless: a knitted collar holds the foot and leaves the striking surface completely clean. Many current versions also have a semi-transparent soleplate, allowing you to literally see through the stud configuration.
