Adidas UltraBOOST 5

The UltraBOOST 5 marks the moment adidas wanted to make its most famous running shoe sleeker again. Where previous generations increasingly featured more plastic on the outside, this one returns to a knitted upper that wraps the foot like a sock, with less framing around it. The silhouette therefore looks slimmer than the models before it.

The sole stayed what the model is named after. Under the foot lies the block of compressed foam beads, visible as a granular mass along the entire sole edge, with the wordmark embossed on the heel cap. The rubber outsole adidas developed together with tire maker Continental provides grip on wet road surfaces, and the three stripes lie as wide bands across the side.

The Uncaged versions in the lineup go furthest in that direction: they omit the plastic cage entirely, leaving only the knit and making the shoe feel like a sock. That makes it more flexible but also less guided during the roll-off.
