About

Adidas Nizza

The Nizza is the German answer to an American question: what do you put opposite the canvas basketball shoe that conquered the world? The answer from the seventies — named after the French city Nice — is a canvas shoe that shows its origins more subtly than its rivals, and that restraint is its hallmark.

The stripes sit in the canvas

Look at the side of a regular Nizza and you barely see the three stripes: they’re stitched into the canvas, tone-on-tone, more felt than seen. Where every other shoe from the brand applies or contrasts its stripes, the Nizza whispers them. Only collaboration editions add color — and therefore immediately stand out as exceptions.

The bumper stops halfway

The second feature is at the toe: the rubber bumper with its diamond tread does not run all the way around like the American rival, but ends diagonally halfway along the foot. From the side the sole edge therefore looks as if it takes a bite out of the shoe. Together with the heel pull tab and the low, snug collar, this gives the Nizza its own silhouette — similar enough to be recognizable, different enough not to be a copy.

One canvas, three forms

Under this label are the low version, a high, and a slip-on without laces with elastic inserts. The materials remain canvas on a vulcanized sole, and the reissues in the RF version add an aged sole edge and a suede heel panel. For comparison: the Chuck Taylor All Star is the extroverted rival, the Vans Authentic the Californian cousin, and the Nizza the European who takes things more quietly.
