Nike Dunk High “Syracuse”: white leather, orange blaze, not much fuss

Nike Dunk High Syracuse White Orange Blaze DD1399-101

There are sneakers you have to explain and sneakers you just put on. The Nike Dunk High in white leather and bright orange is firmly the second kind. Pull it on under a straight jean and the rest of your fit has nothing left to prove. Nike calls this one White / Orange Blaze, style code DD1399-101; everyone else just calls it the Syracuse.

What you’re actually dealing with

A classic Dunk High shape, built from two colours and nothing else. The base is white leather with a perforated toe. Over it lie orange leather overlays: the toe cap, the side panel, the swoosh, the whole heel and the collar around your ankle. The laces are orange, the heel tab too, and the tongue carries an orange trim. Under the white midsole sits an orange rubber outsole, so the colour runs top to bottom. What makes the pair wearable is the distribution — the orange comes in blocks, not in flecks or prints, so from a distance it reads as one calm silhouette with a bright edge rather than a busy mess.

The trousers it works under

Straight or lightly baggy denim in mid blue is the safest and immediately the strongest combination; the orange picks up the blue without you matching a thing. If the high collar gets in your way, roll the hem up one turn so the shaft shows — a Dunk High half-buried under your trouser is a waste of the shape. Black cargos or a dark chino are the second route and probably the easiest if you’re unsure: against black the orange becomes the only colour accent in the whole fit, and you don’t have to do anything else. Keep it quiet on top — grey hoodie, an overshirt in olive or ecru, a dark jacket over it. What I’d leave alone is orange or red up top; two bright points in one outfit compete, and the shoe usually loses that fight.

White leather asks for upkeep

Realistic point: this is a light shoe with a lot of white surface, and that means maintenance. Leather has the advantage that you can wipe it down, so you’re not lost after one rain shower, but expect the midsole and the white panels to be the first to ask for attention. Want something you throw on without thinking, grab a darker Nike; want a shoe that lifts the fit, this is it. On our Hypescore this 2021 retro sits at 82, band ATOMIC — high for a pair that’s been running a few years, and mostly a statement about demand: the Syracuse never really cooled off.

More interesting is what the shops are doing. On Solezilla.com we count thirteen active listings across about a dozen shops, all in euros, from €93 at StockX and Side Kicks up to €241.95 at Klekt, with the middle sitting between roughly €129 and €190. That’s nearly triple for the same pair, and the spread is about which sizes are left where, not quality. There’s no UK or US listing right now, so pounds-and-dollars buyers should add shipping and import. Check the Nike Dunk High “Syracuse” on Solezilla first: every shop side by side, per size, with the current price — it usually saves you a couple of tenners and shows you who still has your size at all.
