Reebok Nano X4

The Nano is the training shoe that linked Reebok to CrossFit, and the X4 is the generation in which that relationship became somewhat looser. Where earlier models were aimed almost exclusively at the gym floor, this one is made broader: still stable enough for heavy lifting, but more flexible than its predecessors so you can also jump and run.

The construction shows the dual purpose. Under the heel is a flat, firm base that must not compress when lifting, while in the forefoot there is a layer of springy foam that absorbs the push-off; the name of that foam is printed on the edge of the sole. A ribbed plastic panel runs along the sides to protect against abrasion from rope climbs, and there is a woven panel on the heel with a repeating logo pattern.

The generational change coincided with a broader shift: CrossFit as a sport continued to grow, but the audience for training shoes became broader. The X4 therefore serves the regular gym-goer just as well as the competitive athlete.
