Nike Metcon 9

The Metcon 9 is built for the gym, and that’s visible in every detail. Where a running shoe aims to be as soft as possible, this model does the opposite: under the heel sits a wide, flat plate that doesn’t compress when you lift heavy, so force goes straight to the floor. Toward the front the sole becomes flexible, because jumping and lunges do require movement.

The details betray the discipline. A ribbed plastic panel runs along the sides, meant to survive rope climbs: that’s exactly where the rope rubs against the shoe. The toe has a reinforced rim for burpees and push-ups, the laces sit low across the instep and there’s a transverse pull loop on the heel. The heel plate is visible at the back as a separate block.

That the Metcon line became so recognisable comes from the CrossFit wave of the past decade. Nike built a shoe that does precisely one thing well and also shows it, rather than delivering an all-rounder.
