Nike Air Pegasus

The Pegasus is not Nike’s fastest running shoe, not the softest and not the lightest. It is the shoe that has simply done the job every year since 1983, and that is exactly why more of them have been sold than any other running model from the brand.

A name with wings

The model is named after the winged horse of Greek mythology, and Nike once nicknamed it the “workhorse with wings”. That captures the aim: it should be suitable for everyday use, at any distance, for runners who ask for nothing special except that it works.

The technology is on the sole

On the midsole you can read AIR ZOOM in large letters. That is not decoration but the core of the shoe: a thin, flat air chamber with tensioned fibers inside that rebound quickly rather than merely absorb. How that works is explained on the Air Zoom page; unlike the Air Max range, that unit here remains hidden in the foam. The upper is seamless knit, with a reflective detail on the heel for use in the dark.

A new number every year

Nike releases a new generation each year, with the version number in the name. That means there are usually multiple generations available at the same time, which can differ noticeably in stack height and foam type. So the number after Pegasus says more about how the shoe runs than the name itself.
