Air Jordan 6

Three features on the Air Jordan 6 are about the same thing: how you get the shoe on and off, and how it stays on afterwards. They are also precisely the three things that identify the 1991 model.

A handle sits on top of the tongue

Not a fabric tab, but a molded loop with an opening a finger can pass through. It’s functional: you can hardly put a high basketball shoe with a narrow opening on without something to hold. Most models solve that with a flimsy pull tab; here there’s a real grip. That loop returns on almost every version, regardless of material or finish.

The clamp on the laces

Just below the top eyelets sits a loose little clamp around the laces. That keeps the tension across the top of the instep, so you can cinch the shaft tight without the lower half slipping. It’s a detail you see on the Air Jordan 4 in a different form, where plastic straps remove lace tension from an open mesh: the same kind of problem, a different solution.

Two points at the heel

The collar extends at the back into two pointed protrusions that point outward like a spoiler. They surround the Achilles tendon without pressing on it, and they give the model its unmistakable side profile. Beneath them is an oval window with the air unit behind it, and a wavy cutout runs along the side of the midsole.

The holes are in clusters

On the side panel and the ankle piece there are clusters of perforations in fixed patterns. They’re placed where the leather is doubled, so they actually do something for the ventilation of an otherwise closed shoe. Further in the line are the Air Jordan 5 and the Air Jordan 3, and the starting point of the series is the Air Jordan 1.
