About
Air Jordan 12
After the gala of the 11, Tinker Hatfield turned the dial: the ’96 12 is a work shoe. Sturdy tumbled leather, metal lace hooks as hardware, and a construction more like a smart men’s boot than a sneaker. It’s the stiffest, heaviest Jordan of its era, and it owes its most famous night to a sick wearer.
The rays run from the sole to the collar
The face of the 12 is in the stitching: from the mid panel stitched lines fan upward to the collar, like rays from a single point. The motif is borrowed from the rising sun on a nineteenth‑century Japanese flag, and it makes every execution recognizable, however subdued the colors. Below runs a separate band of pebbled textured leather that comes over the toe like a wave.
Metal where others use fabric
The upper lace holes are not eyelets but metal hooks, glossy mounted on the leather, and on the midsole rim JUMPMAN sits in a metal accent plate. Inside is the first springy air unit of the series under the forefoot — the technology that became standard from that point. The 12 introduced it, unseen, perfectly suited to a shoe that doesn’t want to show anything.
The fever night
The black-and-red version made history in the 1997 finals, when the namesake, running a high fever, played one of his most famous games. the pair from that night was auctioned decades later for a record sum, and the colorway — known as Flu Game — returns from time to time and sells out immediately each time. Together with the white-and-black Playoffs, it forms the core of the lineup.
Between the neighbors
The 12 sits between two extremes: the patent-leather gala of the 11 before it, and the 13 after it, which with its paw pads and panther eye started telling stories again. The 12 tells nothing; it just stands there. For those who want to follow the series from the start: it begins with the Air Jordan 1.
