New Balance 740: the workhorse nobody saved

Some archive models return because everyone cherished them. The 740 returns because nobody did: in the 2000s it was an everyday running shoe that was worn to pieces and then simply repurchased. Hardly any mint examples were preserved — and that’s exactly what makes the reissue logical. In recent years New Balance has shown that its archive still holds useful shapes even among its top models.

The style codes on this page tell their own story: they start with U740 and almost all end in a 2. The U stands for unisex numbering, and that trailing 2 reveals this is the second version of the reissue — in titles the shoe is usually just called 740. It’s the same kind of quiet code information that reveals the difference between cushioning systems on the 530.

Look at the shoe up close and the 2000s handwriting is everywhere. The cushioning is called ABZORB and is literally screwed onto the midsole wall as an oval pill badge, the model number is on the heel, and the N is a molded plastic appliqué with printed edge lines. The overlays aren’t thick leather panels but flat planes full of thin, parallel speed lines that sweep around the shoe — the fine open mesh underneath keeps the whole thing light. The white midsole is visibly divided into segments, with a contrasting outsole beneath.

In the current New Balance range the 740 is the streamlined option. The 530 is higher and rounder, the 1906 is the shiny maximalist, and the 740 sits below them: low, slim and restrained, despite all those lines. If you want the Y2K runner silhouette without the bulk, this is the one.

On this page you can see which versions of the New Balance 740 are hottest right now according to the Hypescore, from what price they’re available and in how many shops they’re in stock.
