Nike Air Presto: the T‑shirt you pull onto your feet

When it appeared around the turn of the century, Nike didn’t sell this shoe in size 42 or 44, but in XS, S, M, L and XL. That wasn’t a joke. The Presto is built like a garment: a stretch mesh sock that shapes itself to your foot rather than the other way around, and the sizing simply followed that logic. The brand at the time called it a T‑shirt for your feet and, for once, the tagline exactly matched the construction.

Look closely at the flank and you see why that works. Over the midfoot lies a plastic cage with fingers that splay apart, and the laces run through those fingers; the upper therefore doesn’t need to bear tension itself. One more detail almost nobody notices: the Swoosh is not on the mesh but glued to the white midsole, because a logo won’t hold shape on a fabric that stretches every which way. In the sole wall at the heel there are four round holes in a row, and a simple pull tab hangs at the back.

One thing to know before you compare: just over a quarter of what’s listed here is a React Presto. That’s the modern rebuild with a thick, wavy sole of React foam and a much chunkier silhouette; the classic Presto remains low and slim. Another one‑eighth carries Extreme in the name, a cheaper reinterpretation with a stitched faux cage. The title always gives it away, and the difference in the photo is unmistakable. The Presto comes from the same school of thought as the Air Huarache: a flexible inner shoe with the structure as a loose frame around it. Where the Huarache introduced that idea in 1991 with neoprene and a heel cage, the Presto took it nearly ten years later to its logical conclusion. A shoe without a tongue, without a hard toe, without a size in numbers. Rule the Hype wasn’t a slogan yet, but someone at the drawing table already got it.
