About

Salomon XT

XT is not a model but a range: the trail racers Salomon built from the 2000s for races on mountain trails, which later, almost unchanged, moved into the city. Under this name fall the XT-6, the XT-4, the XT-Whisper and the XT-Wings, each with its own page. What is written here is what they share.

There is no lace

The most noticeable shared feature is on the instep: not a flat lace but a thin cord that runs through the eyelets and is tensioned with a single toggle. Pull, slide the toggle closed, and the end disappears into a pocket on top of the tongue. That system comes from racing, where a tied lace is a risk and gloves make a knot impossible. On the street it mainly means: the exact same tension every time.

Welded, not stitched

The upper is an open weave onto which thin, glossy panels are welded rather than sewn. Those panels form a wing pattern that runs from the sole edge to the eyelets and distributes the pull forces, with the large diagonal wordmark across the flank. Seams are almost entirely absent, because on a mountain trail every seam is a place where water gets in and wear begins.

The sole has a name on its own chassis

Between the cushioning foam layer and the foot lies a separate, firmer midpiece, marked with the letters ACS: the stability chassis that gives the range its firm underfoot feel. Beneath that is an outsole with sharp, widely spaced lugs that grip loose ground. On asphalt those lugs wear faster than a street sole, and that is the toll of their origin.

Which XT suits which

The XT-6 is the best-known and most streamlined; the XT-4 sits fuller and rounder around it; the XT-Whisper is the softer, more cushioned variant. The differences between them are in sole height and fit, not in the system, since cord closure, welded panels and chassis are present across all versions. Those looking for comparable terrain from another brand end up with the Adidas Terrex line, which does the same kind of work in a very different design language.
