Nike Spikes

Spikes are the shoes in which records are broken. Under the forefoot are metal spikes that dig into the synthetic track so no force is lost at push-off. Everything above that is reduced to the essentials: an ultra-thin upper, minimal cushioning and a sole that is stiff rather than flexible.

The selection on this page is a cross-section of athletics, because the shoe differs significantly by event. The Dragonfly is built for middle and long distances, with a plate that only runs halfway. The Maxfly is the sprint shoe, with a stiff full-length plate and the spikes placed far forward. There are also models for long jump and pole vault, each with its own spike pattern and a tailored heel.

The spikes themselves are interchangeable and available in different lengths, usually between five and nine millimetres, depending on the track and the event. They are screwed in and out with a small key, and for many models that key is included in the box.

Off the track spikes are unusable: on asphalt the spikes wear down and on indoor floors they damage the surface. For road races look at the Nike Alphafly or the Nike Vaporfly.
