Nike Air Zoom Pegasus: the workhorse with wings

No Nike model has been continuously in the catalog for so long. The Pegasus appeared in 1983, was designed under the direction of Mark Parker with input from Bruce Kilgore, and has been remade almost every year since. The count is now well over forty. Nike calls it the workhorse with wings, and that sums it up well: this is not a racing shoe and not a collectible, but the shoe that racks up the miles.

What ties the generations together is printed on the midsole. AIR ZOOM is located at the forefoot, directly above where the unit sits. It’s the quickest point of recognition if you have a pair in hand without the box: no window in the side like the lifestyle models, but a closed midsole with the name in it.

Every year something changes, and rarely everything at once. Sometimes the update is in the foam, sometimes only in the fit. With the Pegasus 38, for example, the sole remained unchanged compared to the 37 and all attention went to the last and the heel cup. Anyone who places the two side by side will see that the white heel panel on the 38 runs noticeably higher.

On this page the generations are mixed. The number in the title is the only thing you need: higher is newer. Older designations such as Air Pegasus 92 and Pegasus 33 also appear, and variants like Shield for wet conditions and FlyEase for those who want to put the shoe on without using their hands.
