Adidas Slides

In 1972 athletes asked adidas for something for the locker room and by the pool. The answer became the Adilette, and more than fifty years later that shower slide has grown into one of the brand’s longest-running designs. What started as shower gear now shuffles across festival fields, supermarkets and fashion shows.

The original is recognizable by two things: the padded knobbed texture on the wide strap, with the three stripes as raised ribs running through it, and the pebbled footbed with the trefoil on the side. From that basic recipe adidas built a complete family. The Aqua is cast from a single quick-drying piece of foam for real wet work, the Lite swaps the texture for a clean smooth strap, the Comfort places a softer footbed under the foot and the Boost sets the whole slide on a sole of compressed foam beads, the same cushioning that made the brand’s running shoes famous. For those who prefer something closed there’s even an Adilette Clog, and alongside all this there’s the simple Duramo slide.

That a slide can be a serious fashion item is proven by the collaborations in the range on this page. Raf Simons pressed a diamond pattern into the strap and put his name on it, Eric Emanuel created an edition around the US McDonald’s All American high school tournament and Extra Butter even knitted the strap like a cable sweater. In this way the most modest member of the adidas family quietly became a collectible.
