Adidas London

The London is part of the City Series, the range with which adidas in the 1970s named its models after European cities. It was a terrain runner in suede with a gum sole, and the city name appeared in gold-coloured letters on the side, next to the three stripes. For collectors, that series is one of the most sought-after chapters of the archive.

The story behind it explains the status. The City Series appeared in limited runs and then disappeared for decades, after which a collecting culture developed especially in England and Scotland around the rarest names. Shops like size? later released reissues that retained the original colourways, with the city name in the same gold-coloured lettering.

The design is otherwise simple. Soft suede across the entire upper, leather stripes with double stitching, a padded collar and a gum sole with a fine tread that runs up over the toe. On the heel there is a leather piece in a contrasting colour.

Within the same generation the Adidas Gazelle and the Adidas SL72 cover the low suede silhouette; the Adidas Country comes from the same terrain-runner tradition.
