Adidas Fear of God

The collaboration between adidas and Fear of God is one of the rare cases in which a fashion designer was allowed to design a complete sports line instead of recoloring an existing model. Jerry Lorenzo, the head of the American label, was tasked with building a basketball offering from scratch, and the result differs from what the sport is used to on almost every point.

The basketball models show this. The high version features a wide Velcro strap across the vamp, in the same shade as the rest of the shoe, with a padded collar that runs above the ankle. The upper combines suede with mesh panels in muted, earthy colors, and the sole is a thick, softly shaped block without logos or technical markings. The branding appears only as a small block on the heel.

That restraint is the point. Where basketball shoes typically shout for attention with colors and visible technology, this line opts for calm: the same color from toe to heel, little contrast and no ornamentation. On the court that is unusual, in fashion it is recognizable.

Within the range, the Nike Book 1 is the closest kindred spirit in restraint, while the Adidas Yeezy shows how adidas previously collaborated with an outside designer.
