Eight problems, one shoe

The Nike SB PS8 is not an ordinary skate shoe, and that starts with the name. PS8 stands for “problem solver 8”, the Instagram handle of the late Sandy Bodecker, the man who helped found Nike SB. The shoe is built to solve the eight problems the SB team most often encountered with skate shoes: durability, cushioning, board feel and long-term comfort. So the name is not marketing, but a mandate.

Look through the sole

The most striking feature is underneath. The PS8 features a semi-translucent sole that reveals its construction: a rubber outsole with grip that encloses a foam insert with a built-in nylon plate. That plate provides stability and board feel, the foam absorbs impacts. You can see the work instead of it disappearing beneath a closed sole.

Flyknit where it’s needed, leather where it scuffs

The upper mixes Flyknit mesh with leather, and that’s an intentional distribution. The Flyknit, which even appears literally in the side panel, keeps the shoe light and breathable; the coated leather sits where skating causes the most wear. On top there’s a sock-like entry and the toe curls up at the front, a line more reminiscent of a running shoe than of a classic skate shoe.

New silhouette, not retro

The PS8 doesn’t lean on an old model. Where many well-known shoes from the Nike SB line are reissues, like the Nike SB Dunk, this is a new design built from the ground up for skating. The look is modern and slightly futuristic, but the approach is purely functional.

What differs by version

The construction remains the same across versions: the same upper, the same translucent sole, the same nylon plate. What varies is the finish of the mesh and the leather and the shade of the sole rim. Place two versions next to each other and the build is identical.
