A ’70s runner, made for skating

The New Balance Numeric 440 v2 is a skate shoe from Numeric, New Balance’s skateboard line. The silhouette draws on the brand’s classic running shoes from the 1970s, but is rebuilt for the board: a low profile with a large NB logo on the side, a suede-and-mesh upper, and a sturdy cupsole with a gum-trim. It’s a heritage shape with skate functionality, the second generation of the 440.

Suede, mesh and a skate cupsole

The construction is that of a proper skate shoe. The suede on the toe and side panels takes the hits, while mesh provides some breathability. Underfoot is a cupsole that offers grip and cushioning and resists abrasion from grip tape. The red midsole trim and the characteristic NB logo visibly anchor the shoe in the brand.

Second generation, plus a Trail variant

The 440 v2 is the evolution of the original Numeric 440, with adjustments to fit, cushioning and durability. There’s also a Trail Low version, with a rougher, gum-soled base that mixes the skate look with a trail touch. The core remains the same low, ’70s-runner-inspired shape.

The 440 v2 is part of New Balance Numeric, alongside pro models like the Numeric 306. Where the 306 has its own, somewhat bolder skate silhouette, the 440 sticks close to a classic runner shape. Together they show how Numeric translates New Balance’s heritage to skateboarding.

What differs by version

The low runner shape, the NB logo, the suede-and-mesh upper and the cupsole remain the same across versions. What changes is the colorway and whether it’s the regular 440 v2 or the Trail Low. Put two versions side by side and the shoe is the same; the detailing changes.
