Vans Authentic

This is the first one. When the Van Doren brothers opened their factory in California in 1966, this was the model that rolled out first, under the internal number 44 and the designation deck shoe. Everything the brand made after that is at its core this shoe with something added: a padded collar, a side stripe, a higher shaft, or the laces removed.

Five eyelets, and nothing else

Count the eyelets and you have five pairs. They are set directly into the canvas as metal rings, without a reinforcement panel underneath and without an overlay on top. That makes the lacing sit noticeably far forward and low on the instep. On the brand’s high skate shoe there are seven, with a suede panel around them; that difference is exactly where the protection this model lacks is located.

The collar is a finished edge

Here the shoe most clearly reveals its age. Around the ankle there is no padding, no stitched rings, no foam: it’s a single layer of canvas with a turned hem. That makes the opening thin and the weight low, and it also means the edge can rub against the ankle during long walks. Anyone who wants the same shape with padding can choose the Era, which differs on that one point and is otherwise the same.

The upper consists of a front panel and a rear panel, with one curved seam between them that runs from the lacing to the sole edge. No toe cap, no side stripe, no reinforcement. Below sits the same rubber rim shared across the brand, with a thin piping along the top, and beneath that the waffle tread. Upper and sole are bonded together under heat, which keeps the sole thin and flexible.

What that delivers and what it costs

The gain is feel: there’s almost nothing between your foot and the ground, and the shoe is broken in after a day. The cost is wear, because every part that protects on the other models is missing here. Those who want to skate look to the SK8-Hi or the Old Skool; those who seek the convenience of slipping on look to the Slip-On. Outside this brand, the Chuck Taylor All Star is the closest.
