On’s maximalist daily trainer

The Cloudmonster arrived in 2022 and broke with On’s usual low-slung look by piling on the foam.
It was the brand’s answer to the maximal, high-stack running shoe, a category most people still link with Hoka.
The name is earned, because the CloudTec pods here are the largest On had ever put under a shoe.

Big pods, big roll

Those oversized pods sit under a pronounced rocker, so the shoe tips you forward and keeps the stride moving.
A Speedboard runs through the midsole to add snap, which stops all that cushioning from feeling dead underfoot.
The result is a protective daily trainer for road running and long walks that reads firm rather than plush.

Fit and family

The Cloudmonster tends to run slightly small and suits narrow to medium feet more than wide ones.
For a softer, more flexible On ride without the Speedboard stiffness, look at the On Cloudsurfer.
It also sits at the opposite end of the range from the lightweight On Cloud 5, and later Cloudmonster generations refine the same recipe.
