Nike Air Zoom Vomero

This name leads two lives at once. In the running shop Vomero is the comfort line that simply continues, with the 14, 15 and 16 as serious road shoes. On the street Vomero means something else: there it’s the fifth generation from 2009, rediscovered as a fashion shoe. The selection on this page consists for the most part of that Vomero 5, and the rest of this text is about it.

More parts than anyone

The 5 owes its second life to its busyness. The upper stacks open mesh, thin film and hard plastic into dozens of small, overlapping parts, exactly the level of detail running shoes excelled in around 2009 and which was later pared away. What was once technology now reads as ornament. Across the midfoot lies a ribbed plastic panel like a row of gills, with the swoosh as an outline on top.

The heel panel is a disco ball

At the back is the most remarkable part: a panel full of small triangular facets, like a cut gemstone. It catches light differently on every colorway and is, together with the gill ribs, the quickest recognition point. The midsole has the cushioning foam’s name written out in full, and the outsole is divided into separate, hinged segments that each touch the ground individually. Reflective bars on the toe and heel complete the early-2000s look.

Pulled out of storage by fashion

The 5 disappeared with its generation into the archives until a British label reissued it at the end of the 2010s and the regular versions followed. Since then it sits in the row of techrunners alongside the New Balance 9060 and the Asics Gel-NYC: shoes that present their complexity as style. Within that group the Vomero is the most detailed, and in grey the best known.
