New Balance 1000: the number that shouts the loudest

New Balance has been numbering its models for decades, but rarely as tellingly as here. The 1000 dates from the early 2000s, when running shoes didn’t have to be subtle, and the reissue doesn’t hide that. On the toe, 1000 is stamped in relief into the rubber, the N sits as a prominently cast emblem across the side, and the panels lie layered in suede, mesh and smooth overlays.

The sole is where the era speaks the loudest. There’s a window in the heel showing the cushioning chamber, the outsole runs out into wavy blocks, and the whole stack is taller than that of any classic New Balance model. On top of the collar is a thickly padded rim that protrudes at the back. This is not a shoe that apologizes.

Within the brand, the 1000 stands in the company already described on this site. The 1906 is the shiny futurist, the 9060 an enlarged reworking of the heritage, and the 740 the sleek work shoe from the same years. The 1000 sits at the top of that list in terms of volume, with the visible cushioning chamber as its signature.

That the brand archives from around 2000 are all opening now is no coincidence: the same movement brought back the Asics Gel-NYC and the Response CL. Within that group the 1000 is the least-known name, and precisely for that reason a find for those who don’t want to walk in the same shoe as everyone else.
