Air Jordan 14

Michael Jordan drove a Ferrari 550 M, and Tinker Hatfield looked at that car longer than at a basketball court. The result is the most literal car shoe Jordan Brand ever released — and at the same time the model that marks the end of an era.

Look for the badge, and you’ll see the rest

The clearest evidence is on the side panel: the Jumpman isn’t set directly on the leather but placed inside a little shield, exactly the shape of a brand badge on a car hood. Seven of those shields are distributed across the shoe. Then look at the surrounding panel and you’ll see horizontal ribs running like body lines, with a row of small perforations beneath where a car has its ventilation grilles.

The sole is a spoiler

The comparison continues underneath. The midsole has a cutout you read as an intake, and sculpted fins run forward around the toe that suggest aerodynamics more than traction. Beneath it all sits Zoom Air: a thin, tightly responsive cushioning that stays low to the ground, because this was still a game shoe and not a concept model.

Game 6, and then nothing more

On June 14, 1998, Jordan played his last game as a Chicago Bull in Utah. With eighteen seconds on the clock he took the shot that decided the title, wearing a black-and-red Air Jordan 14. That colorway has since been called the Last Shot, and the model thus carries a weight you don’t see in the leather: it is the shoe in which the story stopped.

Where it stands in the line
