About Adidas Y-3
Adidas Y-3
Search these shoes for the three stripes and you usually won’t find them. That’s notable for a line whose name literally refers to them: the Y is for Yohji Yamamoto, the 3 for the stripes. When the Japanese designer teamed up with the German brand at the start of this century, the agreement was apparently that his handwriting would carry more weight than the house brand — and that exact reversal made Y-3 the start of an entire genre.
The first designer line, not just another
Before Y-3 there were sneakers and fashion houses, and they rarely met. This collaboration, started in 2002, was the first in which a fashion designer got an ongoing personal line at a sports brand instead of a one-off release. Everything that followed, from other houses at other brands, walks in this path. Anyone who looks at the size of the designer offering on this site is looking at the descendants of this line.
The signature sits on the sole
The members differ extremely — more on that below — but two trademarks keep recurring. On the sole or a sole panel YOHJI YAMAMOTO appears in full capitals, and on the tongue his signature is in brush script. Black is the native color: even the colored versions start from black, the color on which the designer built his entire oeuvre.
Japanese names, divergent forms
The members bear Japanese names and share no silhouette. The Qasa wraps the foot in wide elastic straps without a meaningful visible lacing; the Kaiwa is a sculpted, heavy street shoe; the Runner 4D wears the parent company’s printed lattice sole; around them stand Shiku, Hokori, Kaiwa and the running-tinged models. The constant is the approach: serious technology from the sports brand, redrawn into something that can exist on the catwalk.
Where the line sits
Within the parent brand Y-3 is the counterpoint to the archive lines: not reissues but new shapes on existing technology, related to what the UltraBOOST brought to cushioning and what the EQT line preached in reduction. For those who compare designer sneakers, this is the line with the longest history and generally the widest size range available.
