Adidas Taekwondo: off the mat, with its old name in tow
This is not a sneaker that references a combat sport — it is one. The Taekwondo comes from adidas’s combat-sports catalog, where it was sold as a training shoe for the mat, and the reissue literally carries that past on the flank: the small label with SMII-LS on it is the old catalog name under which the shoe used to be known. Few reissues display their birth certificate so visibly.
The construction betrays the purpose. Stitched arches run over the toe, folding the leather around the toes like a glove, the sole is a flat layer of gum with no heel, and instead of laces there’s a wide flap over the instep — you step into it like a slipper. Versions with Lace in the title do add visible laces, and the W you often see marks the women’s last on which the model mainly appeared.
When choosing, pay attention to one name in particular: the Taekwondo Mei. That’s the ballet variant — even lower, with a deep cut like a ballerina and the gum sole split into two separate pods under the toe and heel. Titles like Mei Ballet tell you exactly what you get. There are also versions from the Stella McCartney corner and a few designer collaborations; the core of this page is the regular low slip-on.
The timing of the return is no coincidence. After the Samba and the Handball Spezial the fashionable sports shoe is sinking ever closer to the floor, and the Taekwondo is adidas’s endpoint of that movement: it doesn’t get flatter than this.
