The Copa Mundial is the best-selling football boot ever made, and it has been produced almost unchanged since 1979. Adidas released it for the World Cup in Spain, in kangaroo leather, and has changed it so little since that players from three generations have played on the same model. In a sport where new technology is promised every year, that is an exception.
The design is restrained down to the details. The upper is soft leather that molds to the foot, with four stitched ribs across the instep that keep the leather in place. The three stripes lie like wide white bands along the side, with the model name printed next to them in small type. The tongue folds over the laces, just as in 1979, and under the shoe is a fixed studded sole for natural grass.
The explanation for that unchangeability is simple: the model does what it needs to do. Where modern football boots are designed around weight and ball feel, this one is about fit and durability. Many players wear them an entire season without complaints, and for amateur football that is a stronger argument than tenths of seconds.
