Air Max 1 “Michigan”: a maize-and-navy pair, from 68 euros

Nike Air Max 1 CO.JP "Michigan" (FJ5479-410)

This is the kind of pair I love turning up. The Nike Air Max 1 CO.JP “Michigan” (FJ5479-410) had a 209.99-euro retail tag, and right now there’s a shop listing it at 68 euros. That’s about two-thirds under, for a shoe that, to my eye, looks better than half of what came out this year.

Why this one’s special

It’s a women’s pair from the CO.JP line, and the execution isn’t thrifty at all. The yellow panels, that deep maize, are textured leather with a coarse, croc-like grain, on the toe, the heel and the side. Between them sits smooth leather in deep navy. And the Swoosh is yellow with a snakeskin texture pressed into it: two different animal textures on one shoe, in two colours, and it never tips into tacky. Little things I rate: there’s a second, tiny navy Swoosh on the toe, the laces are yellow, the midsole is cream rather than white, and the outsole is yellow too. That cream makes a real difference, because on a bright-white sole this would read a lot cheaper. Maize and blue are the University of Michigan colours, hence the name, and you don’t need to care about any of that to see it’s a strong contrast.

Where the deal is

Here’s my kind of story. Solezilla.com tracks seventeen listings across fifteen shops, all in euros, from 68 up to 195. One Block Down sits at 68 and GOAT right behind at 69, both well under a third of what this cost new. From there the ladder climbs gently: StockX at 89, Sneaker Ask at 110, then 129, 136, 138 and 140 through Collect District, Patta, Side Kicks and Mentastore, a cluster around 150 to 164, and Stadium Goods near 189 at the top of the normal range. There’s one US listing, StockX US at 60 dollars, but add import and shipping and it stops being the bargain it looks, so I’d anchor on the euro floor. No pound offer on this pair right now.

Why so soft on a shoe people actually rate? The Hypescore is 84, band ATOMIC, so it isn’t short of fans. It’s that this is a women’s pair: the larger sizes sit longer, and that’s where the price drops first. That’s not a flaw, it’s an opening. If your size lives in the part of the run that’s overstocked, you pick up a 200-euro-plus shoe for under 90.

My advice is the same as always: filter your size first, then look at the number. Line up the Michigan listings and you’ll see in one glance whether your size sits in the 68-euro corner or the 195-euro corner. More Air Max 1 with the same quiet underpricing sits right beside it. Then call it in Grail or Bail.
