Some colorways sound busier than they actually are. The New Balance 9060 in Moonbeam / Vintage Rose / Lime (U9060GCA) is a perfect example: on paper, it’s three colors, two of which sound pretty bold, but in person, it’s a shoe that looks soft and muted above all else. I’d wear it myself, and it’s worth explaining why — as well as what to watch out for.
What you see
The base is a light mint green across nubuck-like panels, with off-white mesh in between. The peachy pink — that’s the Vintage Rose — appears on the toe, in the middle of the side panel and around the large N. The N itself is mint green with a subtle outline, so it stands out because of its size rather than its contrast. Underneath is a sand-colored midsole and a muted mauve-brown outsole, with a few blue-gray rubber sections in the areas where you push off. There’s also a small silver-colored clip at the heel.
One practical note about the name: Lime sounds brighter than what you actually get. The green is pastel, almost seafoam. If you go by the name and expect a sharp accent, you’ll be looking at something much more subdued. That’s not a criticism — in my view, it actually works really well — but it’s something to know before you order.
Would I wear it?
Yes, with one condition. This isn’t a colorway that quietly adapts to your outfit; it helps define it. It works immediately with denim, gray or off-white, because the sand-colored sole and cream-colored mesh pick up those tones. Pair it with black, and the contrast becomes much harsher, pushing the softness of the pastel into the background. Black isn’t wrong, but you have to do it intentionally.
Beyond that, it’s simply a 9060: a substantial, wavy sole profile with a high heel and plenty of volume underfoot. That really stands out with a slim or cropped trouser leg. Pants that just cover the sole make it look noticeably more understated. I won’t make any firm claims about the fit without having walked in it myself — try it on if you can, and with a sole this substantial, pay close attention to the store’s sizing information.
Everyday wear
To be honest about the light-colored sections: mint and peach with off-white mesh do a poor job of hiding dirt. This is a sneaker for dry days and keeping a brush in the cupboard, not for a wet bike ride to the station. On the other hand, light pastels look more inviting in late spring and summer than a dark shoe, and the mauve outsole is placed exactly where most of the dirt tends to collect. For a rotation otherwise made up of black, gray and white, this is a colorway that stands out without becoming loud.
