Some shoes get worn until they’re completely done. I literally wore this one into the ground — and I’d buy it again in a heartbeat.
The Air Max 90/1 is one of those ideas that’s so simple, you wonder why it didn’t happen sooner: take the legendary “Sport Red” colorway from the very first Air Max 1 in 1987 — Tinker Hatfield’s original, the shoe that introduced the visible Air window to the world — and put that upper on an Air Max 90 sole. Two classics, one shoe. And it’s made from leather, too, which gives it a considerably more premium feel than the mesh versions.
The upper is pure AM1: the familiar mudguard, the gray-on-white panels, that bright red Swoosh and the overlays. Underneath, it’s unmistakably AM90: the chunky midsole, the larger Air window, that solid stance. The crazy thing is that the two halves feel like they were always meant to be together. I wore it for years, through every season, and even when it was worn out, people would still stop me in the street to ask about it. That’s the kind of test a shoe only passes after a thousand miles.
Released in 2018 — almost eight years ago now. And that was my problem: I wanted another pair, but it had become almost impossible to find. I’d already written it off, and even we thought for a moment: let’s keep an eye on it, maybe it’ll turn up again someday.
And then I took another good look at our own site. There’s still one pair left. One shop, one last pair, going for around €397.
