Gel-Kayano 14 “Cream/Black”: silver everywhere, and a plum heel

ASICS Gel-Kayano 14 "Cream/Black / Metallic Plum" (1201A019-108)

On a shelf the ASICS Gel-Kayano 14 in cream and black (1201A019-108) is easy to miss. On the street it isn’t, because there’s so much silver on it that it catches the light with every step. In photos it looks calm. In person it moves.

What’s actually on it

The base is cream mesh: fine, light, keeps the shoe breathable. Over that sit silver metallic panels across the toe, along the lace opening, over the midfoot and well onto the side. The ASICS stripes are black and stack up like a layered block down the side. The heel counter is a brown-purple metallic with GEL-KAYANO 14 pressed into it, and underneath is the visible GEL unit in the heel on a cream midsole and a white-and-black outsole. We list it short as “Cream/Black”, but most shops tag on “Metallic Plum”, and that’s fair: the plum heel is the only warm element on an otherwise cool shoe, and it’s what pulls it out of the standard silver-white runner lane.

How to wear it

This is a shoe with volume, so you need little around it. Straight or slightly wide jeans in a dark wash work best: the cream and silver stand clear of your trousers instead of sinking into them. Black trousers work too, but the contrast gets harder and the shoe becomes the centre of the outfit, which is fine if that’s the plan. What I’d avoid is cargos with a load of pockets on top of this; the Kayano already has enough lines and panels going on, so keep it calm up top. Plain sweater, overshirt, good jacket, done. Same with colour: let the silver do the work and keep the rest neutral.

Practical bit: it started life as a running shoe, so it’s roomy and comfortable and you can stand on it all day. That light mesh doesn’t love rain, though, and cream doesn’t stay cream. Treat it before you start and reckon on a shoe you maintain, not one you kick through puddles in October.

Twenty-one shops, big gaps

Pay attention here. Solezilla.com tracks twenty-three listings across twenty-one shops, all in euros, running from about 152 to 499. GOAT sits lowest at 152, but that’s a single listing below the pack; the real body starts around 209 at maSneakz and Sneaker Ask, climbs through a wide middle between roughly 240 and 340, and tops out past 490 at the consignment end. That’s a difference of hundreds of euros for the same shoe, and at this many sellers the low number usually means a couple of sizes left while the dear one holds the full range. There’s no pound or dollar listing on this pair right now, so UK and US buyers should factor in shipping and import.

The Hypescore is 84, band ATOMIC, so the Kayano is long past secret-tip status and the asks reflect it. Look at the lowest price that has your size, not just the lowest price. Compare it all on the Gel-Kayano 14 page, see what else ASICS is doing in this register right beside it, and leave your call in Grail or Bail.
