Wales Bonner Samba “Leopard”: 220 at retail, 429 to want it now

Wales Bonner x adidas Samba "Leopard Pony Hair" (IE0578)

The adidas Samba spent years as a forty-euro indoor football shoe nobody noticed. Now it’s a fashion object, and the Wales Bonner Samba “Leopard Pony Hair” (IE0578) is the point where that story edges toward self-parody: 220 euros at retail, cheapest listing today 429 euros, dearest just over 1,330.

It is, annoyingly, a lovely thing

Let me start fair, or this gets too easy. This isn’t a cynical cash-grab with a print slapped over it. The upper is pony hair, calf hair with a leopard marking you can literally see lying flat in the photo. The three stripes are cream leather, as is the heel patch, and there’s visible handwork in it: a coarse, braided stitch along the edge you never get on a standard Samba. Add a brown suede toe, brown laces, brass eyelets, and a light-blue satin trim along the collar. That blue strip is the best decision on the whole shoe, the only cool colour in an otherwise warm palette, and it lifts the leopard out of print-for-the-sake-of-print. All on a gum sole. As a piece of making, it’s genuinely good.

And then the bill

Solezilla.com tracks ten listings across nine shops, every one resale or consignment. In euros the ladder runs GOAT at 429, StockX at 479, Sneaker Ask around 502, Collect District 549, Geturbrick 635, then both Farfetch storefronts between 869 and 884, Stadium Goods around 993, and Miinto at the top just over 1,330. Shopping elsewhere, there’s a UK listing at StockX UK for 466 pounds, and a US one at Stadium Goods US for 731 dollars.

So the cheapest is a little over twice retail. The dearest is more than six times it. For a shoe that sat on a shelf in 2023 for 220 euros. I won’t pretend this is inexplicable; it’s a small run from a sought-after designer, and this is what happens. What gets me is how easily we’ve come to accept that a sneaker can reach the price of a good winter coat with nothing about the product having changed. The pair you buy for 1,330 is exactly the pair you buy for 429. There is no better version in the more expensive box.

High score, hard question

Here’s the number I keep coming back to. The Hypescore sits at 82, band ATOMIC, which is high. But that score measures movement and interest, resale activity and attention, not whether anyone thinks the price is fair. So you can have a shoe that reads as plainly hot in the data and still, standing in front of it, struggle to justify it. This is one of those. The heat is real; whether the asking prices are is a separate matter, and one the score doesn’t settle.

My take is the usual one for pairs like this. Want it and can swing it? Fine, it’s a well-made shoe. But put those nine shops side by side first, because there’s roughly 900 euros between the floor and the ceiling for the exact same item. And if you just want to wear a Samba rather than own this one, the plain ones are still around for a fraction of it; the adidas overview is the short route there. Then say your piece in Grail or Bail.
