Nike Air Max 1 ’87 “Great Indoors”: four prints, one calm outfit

Nike Air Max 1 87 Great Indoors Tiger Swoosh FD0827-133

Some sneakers you buy to disappear under everything. This one you buy because you’re in the mood for something. The Nike Air Max 1 ’87 “Great Indoors” — half the internet just calls it the Tiger Swoosh — puts two animal prints and a paisley heel on a single silhouette. It sounds like a shoe you’d dare to wear once a month. It isn’t, as long as you keep the rest of the look quiet.

The base is cream: tumbled leather over the toe, an off-white midsole with the visible Air window beneath it. Over that sit the mudguard, toe and side panels in a black-and-grey cow print with a soft, suede-like texture. The swoosh is the centre of the whole thing — ochre with black tiger stripes, in a different fabric from everything around it, so it lifts right off the profile. There’s a red paisley panel at the heel, a glossy black heel counter, and a pale blue that runs from the tongue base down into the icy, semi-translucent outsole. Nike files it as Sail / Black / Celestine Blue / Picante Red, which for once is a name that matches what’s actually on the shoe.

Keep everything else flat

Four prints means the rest stays plain, and that’s a direction rather than a limit. A straight cream or ecru trouser pulls the cow print up into your silhouette and keeps the whole look softer than black would. A light, slightly wider jean works too, especially a washed blue that rhymes with the celestine in the sole. On top, go for something without noise: a grey knit, a cream overshirt, or a black blazer if you want it sharper. The trap is the matching red bag or the orange jacket — the shoe already does the colour work, so repeat it and it turns into a theme instead of a detail. If you want to pick something up, do it with texture: corduroy, wool, suede. A cropped or turned-up hem helps too, because this is an Air Max 1 you actually want on show.

A loud shoe with loud demand

The Air Max 1 is one of the few Nike shapes that can carry a make-up like this without losing its line, and the market agrees. On our Hypescore this colourway sits at 86 — ATOMIC, the top of the five bands. Supply doesn’t quite keep pace with that. On Solezilla.com we’re tracking ten active listings from eight shops, all in euros, and the spread is wide. StockX opens at €89 and Side Kicks at about €94, the middle sits between roughly €140 and €220 at Sneaker Ask, Sneakeregeer and Mentastore, and Stadium Goods tops it out near €235. There’s no UK or US listing on this pair right now, so if you’re shopping in pounds or dollars, add shipping and import before you fall for a number.

That euro gap is almost entirely about which sizes are still floating around — for a 2023 release that’s a different story at every shop. Which is exactly why you lay them side by side before you pay. Put the shops in order on the Great Indoors model page, filter your size, and see where the gap sits. Want more of the silhouette?
