Nike SB Air Force 1 “Light Chocolate” (HM8517-201): brown suede that actually works

Nike SB Air Force 1 Light Chocolate HM8517-201

Brown is a tricky colour on a sneaker. Too dark and it turns into a work boot, too light and it becomes sand. The Nike SB Air Force 1 “Light Chocolate” (HM8517-201) lands right in between, and that’s the whole reason this pair is worth your time. It dropped on 25 August via SNKRS and selected skate shops, after being pushed back a week from the 18th at the last minute.

The entire upper is suede in a warm, slightly dusty cocoa with a hint of red in it, lighter than the name suggests. The Swoosh is black suede, so the contrast is matte on matte rather than hard. Black midsole with the recessed AIR on the side, brown outsole underneath, a black leather heel tab, laces in the same brown. It’s the Air Force 1 you know, sitting on a sole that looks a little heavier. That’s no accident: this is the skate version, with more padding in the tongue and insole, and on this pair the suede feels thick enough that the shoe holds its shape.

Keep the rest of the fit quiet

Brown suede works best when everything around it calms down. Straight dark jeans or black trousers, and the sneaker does the work. Olive or sand cargos continue the palette nicely, so you stay in the same family without it turning into a matching set. An overshirt or a plain hoodie on top and you’re done.

What I’d avoid: bright blue denim, and anything white that’s brighter than the brown. That pushes the shoe to the edge of the outfit instead of into it. What works well: cream, off-white, dark green, grey. Fit-wise there’s little to think about. The Air Force 1 fits the way you’re used to, and you notice the extra padding when you step in rather than in the length.

Five shops, and a narrow gap between them

In the US the retail price was $120. On Solezilla.com we’re tracking seven listings in euros from five shops, and the range is tight for a Nike SB release: Oz-Sneaker from €132.99, Sneaker Ask at €145, Sneakeregeer at €159.50, Stadium Goods at around €171, and StockX at €204 at the top. Nothing in pounds or dollars yet, so UK and US buyers should add shipping and import costs to any of those numbers before comparing.

That short list is actually good news. There’s no resale panic on this colourway, so you can take your time, find your size and pick the shop that has it. Line them up on the Light Chocolate page first.

For me this is one of the better browns of the autumn, precisely because it doesn’t try to stand out. Opinions differ, though. Grail or Bail?
