There comes a point when a release stops being a release and simply becomes a range. The Nike Mind 001 passed that point a while ago. Our catalog now lists 22 published colorways: low-top versions, slides with their own stylecode series, a Flyknit version, and even a collaboration with Fragment Design. That’s not a drop. That’s a collection.
What it is, as far as anyone can tell
The shape is worth talking about, and not because it’s beautiful. It’s a slip-on with a closed toe and an open heel: a mule. The upper rises from the sole to a single point, giving the side a kind of tent-like shape you don’t see on many other shoes. A field of perforated dots covers the surface, with a swoosh in the same color as the rest. The outsole is fitted with round studs. Retailers describe it as a pre-game mule, which is probably the most honest description there is.
This version, the all-black HQ4307-005, is the most interesting example in the range in that respect. You might think black would hide the shape. The opposite happens: with no color to latch onto, all you see is the silhouette, and that’s exactly what the debate is about.
The reaction is divided, and that’s the news
Usually, a high Grail or Bail score is boring news. Everyone likes it, end of story. Here, things are different. The “Light Bone” sits at 309 Grail votes versus 42 Bail votes — the highest number of yes votes of anything on the release calendar, but also the highest number of no votes. The “Black Chrome” is at 126 to 13, while the “Blackened Blue” slide stands at 76 to 9. This black pair is at 20 to 4.
A shoe that attracts both the most supporters and the most detractors is rarer than one everyone likes. People are genuinely making up their minds here instead of simply nodding along.
There’s just one problem: where’s the scarcity?
That’s where things get awkward. Hype runs on scarcity — on the idea that you’re making a choice not everyone can make. But with 22 colorways released in just over six months, spanning low-top models, slides, and a Flyknit, there’s little to choose from and even less to miss out on. If you don’t get this one, there’s the next. If you miss the next, there’s the one after that.
That doesn’t make it any worse. It simply means the language being used around it doesn’t match what’s actually happening. This isn’t a rare object; it’s a widely released model with a striking shape. Anyone who wants to see the rest of the range can find it on the Mind 001 page; the broader context is on the Nike brand page.
The price says the same thing
This black pair is currently available from six retailers, with prices ranging from 113 to 377 euros. More than three times as much for exactly the same stylecode. That’s not a resale premium on a sold-out pair; it’s a handful of retailers still trying to figure out what this thing is worth. You usually see that kind of spread with a model the market hasn’t quite made up its mind about yet — and, honestly, that’s a better summary of the Mind 001 than any vote count.
Bottom line
I’m not going to claim it’s ugly. That’s the easiest take, and besides, it’s not for me to say. The question that does occupy me is this: can “22 colorways” and “grail” both be true at the same time? I don’t think so, and I suspect the votes will show that in a few months’ time.
If you still want one — and that’s a perfectly reasonable choice — check what retailers are charging first. When the price difference is more than threefold, comparing prices isn’t a side note; it’s half the job.
