Width first, size second
Birkenstock offers the same size in a narrow and a regular version, each with its own article number and marking on the footbed. Women’s styles are narrow by default, while men’s styles are regular.
If a pair of Birkenstocks doesn’t feel comfortable, the problem is more likely to be the wrong width than the wrong size. So try a different width before sizing up or down.
Whole sizes, and one US size covering two values
Because Birkenstock only makes whole EU sizes, one Birkenstock size covers two US sizes. For example, EU 40 corresponds to both US 9 and US 9.5 in women’s sizing. That’s why both are listed in our chart, even though they lead to the same EU size.
Birkenstock also differs significantly from the standard sizing: seventeen of the twenty men’s sizes and twelve of the fifteen women’s sizes correspond to a different EU value. The brand does fit true to size, as long as you choose the right width.
