De Converse SHAI 001 is de eerste signature-schoen van Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, en meteen een van de eigenzinnigste basketbalschoenen van het moment. De “Slither” voert dat door tot in elk detail: een all-over slangenprint over het hele silhouet, van de tong tot in de zool.
Onder die huid zit techniek uit een onverwachte hoek. Converse is sinds 2003 onderdeel van Nike, en die band is hier letterlijk zichtbaar: in de middenzool zit een Nike Zoom Air-unit, met de tekst AIR ZOOM langs de zijkant. Een Converse met Nike-demping — dat kom je niet vaak tegen.
De schoen sluit met een rits over de wreef; de veters zitten eronder verstopt voor een strakke, sokachtige pasvorm. Op de gewatteerde tong staat de handtekening van Shai, een verwijzing naar zijn rugnummer en naar zijn dubbelrol als speler en ontwerper.
