Asics Gel Cumulus: the workhorse under the flagship

Asics builds its running range in tiers, and the Gel Cumulus is the tier where the most miles get made. It is neutral, like the Gel-Nimbus, but without the premium build and the weight that comes with it. For anyone who runs without complaints and just wants a reliable daily trainer, this has been the answer for years, generation after generation into the twenties.

The sole tells you exactly what is inside. At the heel it reads PureGEL, the lighter form of the cushioning gel, and toward the forefoot it reads FF Blast+, the springy foam. That is the exact same combination as on the GT-2000, and that is precisely why the difference between the two is so clear: the same cushioning, but the GT-2000 corrects your foot and the Cumulus leaves it alone. So choose not by cushioning but by what your foot does through the stride.

The upper is a knit mesh with the stripes as thin crossing lines over the midfoot, and the heel reads GEL-CUMULUS in full. The build stays deliberately calm; all the attention sits under the foot.

The generations sit in the title and run into the twenties, with the highest number being the current one. Versions marked TR are for unpaved ground, GTX has a waterproof lining, and GS or PS mark the kids’ sizes. One thing to know: the 16 turns up strikingly often because that generation came back as a separate series, so do not let a low number among the high ones throw you.
