The Gonz’s slip-on

The Adidas Shmoofoil is a slip-on skate shoe from adidas’s skateboard line, designed with skate legend Mark Gonzales. The name comes from his own world: the Shmoo, a recurring figure in Gonz’s artwork. The silhouette is low and simple: a suede-and-canvas upper without laces, elastic panels at the sides for slipping on, and a wide vulcanized-like sole underneath. No bells and whistles, but character.

Suede, canvas and easy entry

The construction is that of a real skate shoe. Suede on the toe and heel absorbs the impacts, canvas in the middle keeps the shoe light and breathable, and the elastic inserts let you slip in and out without laces. Underfoot is a thick, flat, grippy sole, made to stand on a board and also to wear on the street.

The Shmoofoil is part of adidas Skateboarding, alongside pro models like the Busenitz and the Tyshawn. Where those shoes follow the classic skate shape as laced low-tops, the Shmoofoil deliberately opts for the slip-on: less fuss, more convenience, with the same skate-DNA and Gonzales’s artistic input.

A shoe that branches out

Spin-offs have appeared around the model, from laced versions to Shmoofoil slides and sandals for the summer. The name and the Gonz aesthetic link them, while the shape differs per version. The slip-on shoe remains the heart of the range.

What varies by version

The low slip-on shape, the suede-and-canvas upper and the flat sole stay the same across versions. What changes is the distribution of materials and colours and the contrast of the trim. Put two versions side by side and the shoe is the same; the styling changes.
