The Tasman is the slipper that left the house. UGG built its name in the 1970s on sheepskin boots for Californian surfers homesick for Australia, and named this low slip-on after the Tasman Sea. For decades it was simply a good slipper choice; nowadays it is one of the brand’s most sought-after models, worn in places where a slipper officially has no business being.

Recognition is simple. Around the collar runs the braided zigzag band that is internally called the Tasman-braid, stitched onto the suede in a contrasting color. The UGG logo is stamped into the suede on the side, the wool lining visibly curls over the edge, and beneath that lies a light serrated sole with enough outside tread to handle the pavement. It is a design without laces, without closures and without hurry.

Its second life is thanks to social media. Around 2022 it, together with the Ultra Mini boot, grew into UGG’s viral duo: months sold out, shop waitlists and an audience that moved it from bedroom to lecture hall and festival. Strikingly, this happened for women and men at the same time, and the selection on this page just follows that.

Within the family tastes vary. The Ugg Tasman Slipper and the Ugg Tasman II have their own pages, and variants appear in the range such as the Weather Hybrid with closed winter construction, the Alpine and Baxter with different linings and the knitted Flecked Knit. Those who prefer a boot are served by the Ugg Classic Ultra Mini, the other half of the viral duo.

That the slipper has truly entered streetwear was proven by the collaboration with Palace: Sylvester and Tweety embroidered on the vamp, clouds on the side and the London skate label’s name on the heel. A slipper with a resale market — no further proof needed.
