The Speedcross is the best-known trail shoe in the world and owes that position to one thing: grip in mud. Salomon built the model for soft, waterlogged terrain, with lugs so deep and so widely spaced that mud falls out on its own instead of packing in. Anyone running on a Dutch forest path in November notices the difference immediately.
The rest of the shoe is just as functional. Instead of laces it has a thin steel cable that you tighten with one hand and tuck into a pocket on the tongue, so nothing can catch on branches. The upper is a tightly woven panel that keeps mud out, and the brand name runs across a reinforced side panel in large letters. The sole is made from the brand’s own rubber compound, with the name pressed into the rim.
The sixth generation made the fit slightly roomier in the forefoot, a complaint with earlier versions, and improved the cushioning for longer distances. The Gore-Tex versions in the range add a waterproof membrane.
That the shoe also turned up on the street is due precisely to that technical look: the aggressive tread and quick-lace system aren’t found elsewhere. In the same outdoor segment the Merrell Moab 3 and the Asics Gel-Trabuco serve the gentler terrain.
