The shoe that launched Allen Iverson
In September 1996, a 21-year-old Allen Iverson got his first signature model, designed by Scott Hewett. The name “Question” answered the doubters: could a 6-foot guard carry a franchise? By the end of his rookie year, that question was settled.
Hexalite and the icy sole
Technically, the Question centered on visible Hexalite cushioning — a honeycomb structure said to be three times more durable than standard EVA foam — plus a translucent “ice” outsole and a ghillie lacing system. The contrasting toe, classic in white with a red toe, drew the eye straight to Iverson’s lightning-quick footwork.
From the hardwood to the street
The Question was bulky, loud, and unapologetically street, cutting against the sleek mid-’90s aesthetic. It was one of the first basketball shoes that looked as right with baggy jeans as with a 76ers uniform — and it sold out almost immediately on release.
