The Pump is the best-known invention in sneaker history that you operate with your thumb. Reebok built an inflation system into the shoe in 1989: press the button on the tongue and air is pumped into chambers around the ankle until the shoe fits snugly around your foot. A valve on the side releases the air again. What began as medical technology became the most talked-about shoe of its time.
The design is immediately recognizable. On the tongue is the round pump button, usually in a contrasting color and sometimes shaped like a basketball, with the tubes that distribute the air beneath it. On the side is the release valve as a small button, and across the upper run the curved panels that enclose the air chambers. On the basketball models a wide plastic bridge also runs over that.
The breakthrough moment came in 1991, when Dee Brown, during the NBA dunk contest, pumped up his shoes in front of the camera and then blind-dunked. That image sold more shoes than any advertisement, and the Pump grew into a status symbol on every schoolyard.
