Reebok Engine A

The Engine A is Reebok’s return to the basketball shoe, and the brand chose a striking premise: the shoe is named after a car engine and visually emphasizes engineering. Under the forefoot runs a plastic element in a bright contrasting color that juts out from the sole like a block, as if you were looking into the engine block.

The rest follows that line. The upper is a woven plane with a stripe pattern in the weave, overlaid with plastic panels that hold the foot during lateral movements. The brand mark sits large and embossed on the side, and the sole carries a second visible element under the heel that marks the cushioning. The colorways are correspondingly bold.

The move is strategic. Reebok was absent from the basketball market for decades after the years it played with Shaquille O’Neal and Allen Iverson; with this line and a new generation of players the brand is trying to return to the floor.
