About Puma Mostro
Puma Mostro: the monster Puma itself didn’t see coming
Mostro is Italian for monster, and that name is not a marketing joke. Turn the shoe over and you see a sole full of rubber nubs that climb up the edge at the toe and heel, like the teeth of an animal sinking into the asphalt. Puma pulled that idea in 1999 from two completely incompatible corners of its own archive: an eighties surf shoe and a sixties sprint spike. The result was stitched together like Frankenstein’s monster, and that’s what it’s called.
The rest of the construction is equally idiosyncratic. There are no laces: a strap lies across the instep that tightens the shoe, and the upper folds around it like a skin. The formstrip runs like a muscle along the flank, the silhouette stays low and wedge-shaped, and on the perforated versions the leather is riddled with hundreds of holes. Everything about this shoe says speed without ever having seen a track.
Puma expected ten thousand pairs. More than a million went over the counter. The spikes were somewhat flattened along the way into lower studs to make the shoe wearable, but the shape remained, and after a quarter-century of silence it returned from 2024 in a wave that is still growing. Versions with OG in the title follow the original most faithfully; Mule versions omit the heel and XC titles have a weather-resistant finish.
Within the Puma house the division of roles is now complete. The Suede is the stripped-down classic, the Speedcat the flat racer, the RS-X the maximalist with its layers, and the Mostro the odd one out that doesn’t resemble any of the three. Whoever wears it consciously chooses the shoe that looks least like a sneaker.
