The Mexico 66 got its name from the Olympic Games held in Mexico City in 1968; the model appeared two years earlier as a preview. It is a low, narrow leather silhouette, with a curved stripe across the side that crosses under the laces with the stripe from the other side. That cross pattern is the brand’s trademark and appears on almost every version.
The construction is simple and recognizable. There is a suede cap in a contrasting color over the toe, the sole is a thin rubber layer in a gum shade with a fine tread, and a second suede panel runs along the heel. There is little cushioning underneath, so the shoe sits close to the ground and is closer to a retro running shoe than to a modern sneaker.
That sober, sixties look is exactly why the model holds its own next to busier sneakers. The Mexico 66 is worn as an everyday shoe that suits both jeans and smarter trousers, and it appeared, among other places, in the film Kill Bill in the well-known yellow-and-black version.
