Nike V2K Run

The V2K Run is Nike’s take on the turn of the millennium. The name refers to the year 2000, and the silhouette draws on the running shoes of that period: a low, wide sole, panels in metallic silver and an upper where mesh and synthetic materials are layered. The model is newly designed, but wants to look as if it had been sitting in a box for twenty-five years.

The details play into that theme. Shiny silver panels lie over the toe and sides, catching the light, the Swoosh sits as a separate element on a curved panel and the tongue carries a small rectangular brand label. The sole extends at the heel into a block of separate segments, with an artificially yellowed tint, as if the shoe had been in the closet for years.

The timing is no coincidence. When the bulbous, technical silhouettes from the 2000s returned, Nike reached into its own archive instead of doing a literal reissue: the Nike V5 RNR does the same at a higher silhouette, and both lean on the success of the Nike Vomero 5, the old running model that sparked the trend.

That the V2K Run resonated mainly with a younger audience fits that story: it’s the shape of an era most wearers only know from photos.
